Nyarugenge Court Hears Dispute Over Alleged Irregular Auction of Property by Equity Bank Rwanda
The Nyarugenge Primary Court, on Thursday, July 2, 2026, heard case No.
RCOM00250/2026/TC, involving Equity Bank Rwanda, which is being sued by Nizeyimana Athanase, who claims that the bank unlawfully auctioned off his property.
During the hearing, Nizeyimana stated that he had applied for a loan of 40 million Rwandan francs from Equity Bank, but that he did not receive the full amount. He said the bank only disbursed 29 million francs, and then quickly proceeded to auction his apartment building (étage), located in Kabeza Cell, Kanombe Sector, Kicukiro District.
The plaintiff insists that the auction was carried out improperly, arguing that the bank auctioned his property before disbursing the full loan amount he had requested and was allegedly entitled to receive.
On the side of Equity Bank, its lawyer requested the court to first facilitate mediation between the bank and its client, in order to determine whether the dispute could be resolved without proceeding with a full trial.
After hearing both parties, the court encouraged them to consider mediation. However, it ruled that if mediation fails, the case will proceed to a full hearing on the merits next month.
No final decision has yet been made regarding the claims by Nizeyimana or the defense presented by Equity Bank, as the case is still in the hearing phase.
